MSME Udyam Registration Certificate: What Happens When Your Business Activity Changes?

Suppose a merchant starts manufacturing their own products, a workshop begins offering repair services, or a service company starts selling specific items. Due to these changes, the information listed on your MSME Registration Certificate may no longer match your current business operations.

In most cases, your Udyam number remains the same. The steps you need to take depend on the specific nature of the change, so let’s understand this further.

Does a change in activity cancel your Udyam registration?

No. Your Udyam Registration Number is permanent and never expires, so adding a new activity will not cancel it. The point is simply that the certificate is useful only when it corresponds to your actual business operations.

Banks, subsidy schemes, and tender applications check your details against their records. If your certificate says one thing and your business does another, you may face delays or questions. So if your activity has changed, update it.

What is considered a change in business activity?

Moving from trading to manufacturing, or the other way around

  • Adding services alongside products

  • Launching a product category that falls under a different NIC code

  • Shutting down one activity and carrying on with another

  • Opening a new plant that does different work

Your registration lists your activities using NIC codes, which are numeric codes that classify what you make or provide. A new activity usually means adding a new code.

When do you update or register a new activity?

This is where most owners get stuck. The question to ask is whether your business identity is still the same.

Situation

What to Do

Same owner, same PAN, new activity

Update the existing registration

Change in address, employees, investment or turnover

Update the existing registration

Proprietorship turned into a company or LLP

New Udyam Registration

Business sold or handed over to a new owner

New Udyam Registration by the new owner

Change in the entity's PAN

New Udyam Registration

The easy rule: same PAN, update. New PAN, register again.

One PAN can hold only one Udyam registration, but that single registration can carry several activities. You never need to apply twice just because you added a second line of work.

How to update your Udyam registration?

Here is the process on the Udyam registration website:

  • Open the udyam website and pick the option “Update Udyam registration” to update your Udyam registration.

  • Enter your Udyam Registration Number and your registered mobile number or email.

  • Confirm with the OTP you receive.

  • Add the information in the given section that needs changing, such as activity details or NIC codes.

  • Add the new NIC code and choose the right activity type, manufacturing or services.

  • Check everything once, then submit.

Keep your PAN, GSTIN, and Aadhaar-linked mobile number handy. The system pulls data from tax records, so what you enter has to match them.

Udyam Certificate download after the update

Once your changes are saved, go back to the same website and click on the Print MSME Certificate option, then fill the Udyam certificate download form, enter your Udyam registration number, and download the revised/edited Udyam certificate as a PDF.

Keep one copy on your phone and another in your email. Banks and buyers tend to ask for it when you least expect it.

Will a new activity change your MSME category?

It might. Your category depends on two things: investment in plant and machinery or equipment, and turnover. Under the limits effective from 1 April 2025:

  • Micro: investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore

  • Small: investment up to ₹25 crore and turnover up to ₹100 crore

  • Medium: investment up to ₹125 crore and turnover up to ₹500 crore

A new line of business can push those numbers up, so check where you stand after any expansion.

Common mistakes to avoid

Leaving old NIC codes in place. If you've stopped an activity, remove it. Unused codes only create confusion.

  • Picking the wrong activity type. If you manufacture but select services, your category and benefits can be read the wrong way.

  • Details that don't match. A name or address that differs from your PAN or GST record can block the update.

  • Applying again by mistake. A second registration on the same PAN isn't allowed. Use the update option instead.

  • Skipping to download Udyam certificate PDF. The old certificate is still sitting in your files, and it's easy to send it out by habit.

When do you need a new Udyam registration?

Sometimes starting fresh is the right call. If your sole proprietorship becomes a private limited company, the PAN changes, so you register again under the company's PAN. The same goes if you buy an existing business and run it under your own PAN.

In these cases, the old registration belongs to the old entity, so don't try to carry it over. With your documents ready, a new registration doesn't take long.

One last tip

Look over your Udyam details once a year, ideally right after you file your returns. If something has changed, fix it then and there. And if you can't tell whether to update or register again, check your PAN and entity type. That usually settles it.
